Country focus: A spectrum of Turkey

Thiruvananthapuram: The country focus section in the 19th IFFK will include 8 films from Turkey that is celebrating 100 years of cinema. The Turkish film industry, that underwent numerous crisis and hiccups, showed signs of revival during the early 90’s. The films portray an even blend of the modern liberalized turkey and its existing conflicts, diversities and ambiguities with the traditional culture.

‘Pandora’s Box, directed by Ustaoglu, portrays the life of three brothers who meet up after the death of their mother. Similar to the Pandora’s Box in Greek history, their life ahead is accompanied by unresolved problems and crisis. The film is a joint venture by Turkey, France and Germany.
‘Majority’, written and directed by Serene Yuce describes the internal conflict of a middle class youngster who is always in fight with his cruel father. The guy who falls in love with a girl from minority tribe is finally forced to give up amidst immense pressure from the social values of the majority.

‘The Night of Silence’ written and directed by Reis Celik has bagged numerous awards including the Crystal Bear at the Berlin International Film festival. The film is about an orthodox Turkish wedding that don’t give the privilege to choose one’s life partner.

Yozgat Blues, ‘A Joint Venture by Turkey and Germany’ is directed by Mahmut Fazil Cozkum. The film voyages through the life of Yavus, a reputed musician and the new guests who walk into his life after the death of his wife.

The film ‘Come to My voice’, directed by Huseyim Kerebey has earned overwhelming response from the viewers and critics of the country. The film is about the life of an old man and his granddaughter who live in a remote village in the Kurdhish hills. The story is about the struggle for existence by the minority communities.

The major attraction of ‘Sivas’ is the remarkable acting performance by the child artist Dogan Izci. The film is written, directed and produced by debutant Kaan Mujdeci. The film portrays the life of the 11 year Aslan and a fighting dog Sivas that he has saved, which dies after losing a fight.

‘A Fair Ground Attraction’ directed by Mechmet Eryilmaz, is a modern day fairy tale, articulate in its own rite and precise in its ingenious jargon where the story is meticulously laid out. The visualization of the fairgrounds are simply breathtaking while the emotional properties of the people living here makes this movie a must watch.

‘I am not Him’ describes the story of Nihath, an unmarried youngster working in a restaurant. The film progresses through his regular journeys with his friends and sexual workers. The film, brought out as a joint venture by Turkey, Greece, France and Germany is written and directed by Tayfun Pirselimoglu.
