German Cinema underwent timely Changes: Surjodoy Chatterjee

German cinema has undergone necessary changes according to the time, to go along with the social and political scenario in the country, said Surjodoy Chatterjee, Head of Goethe Film Institute. He was speaking at the seminar on the topic ‘Goethe Film Archive for South India’ as part of the 19th IFFK.  If comedy and romance were the focus areas during the initial period of German Films, it was taken over by expressionism by the 1920’s. Both the World wars adversely affected the German Film Industry.
During the reign of Adolf Hitler, cinema was just another medium to propagate the Nazi ideologies. The directors never had the courage to bring out Hitler’s atrocities and homicide until the latter half of 1960’s. Now the situation has changed a lot. The present German cinema is depicting real life situations, added Surjodoy.
