TO THE TRUIMPH OF A MAJESTIC JOURNEY

The prestigious and most distinct festival of Kerala is about to set down in a day, after its week long majestic journey. The 19th edition of IFFK has been adorning the capital city with its elegance and the most astonishing crowd of delegates, officials, film personals and many others. Inaugurated on 12th December in the Nishagandhi Open Theatre by the Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, IFFK set off its journey by the screening of the inaugural film Dancing Arabs directed by Eran Riklis. 
Around 140 films from around the world were screened. With a diverse gathering of delegates for every films screened, made the fest reach the clouds. The interactive and conversational sessions like Press Meet, In Conversation, Meet the Director, Seminars and Panel Discussions enriched the festival. The Open Forum, which was re-introduced after an interval of two years, was well received by the delegates. Relevant film-related issues were debated here. IFFK also paid homage to the veterans, J. Sasikumar, Balu Mahendra, Asok Kumar, P Ramdas, Tilakan and Kunchacko in a separate function. 
The most important feature of this edition of IFFK was the selection of variety films. 61 films from 31 countries were showcased under the World Cinema Section. Out of these, 12 were of women directors. 14 films were screened under the category of International Competition out of which 4 were Indian films. As a token of respect to the Life Time Achievement Award winner Marco Bellocchio, his film My Mother’s Smile was screened.  7 films each were screened under the categories of Malayalam Cinema Today and Indian Cinema Now.
Renowned Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan will be the guest of honour in the closing Ceremony. Kerala Governor P Sathasivam will present the prestigious awards, including the Golden Crow Pheasant Award at Nishagandhi Open air Theatre today (19 Dec) at 4 pm. Minister for Cinema, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan will preside over the function. Minister for Culture KC Joseph and Leader of the Opposition, V S Achuthanandan will felicitate the function. T Rajeevnath, Chairman of Chalachithra Academy will present the festival report. Cultural Affairs Secretary Rani George IAS will welcome the gathering and S Rajendran Nair, Secretary of Chalachithra Academy will express the Vote of Thanks. The film to win the Best Film Award will be screened at 6.30 pm in the Nishagandhi Open air Theatre.
