Cinemas should be parallel to life: T V Chandran

“Cinema should try to represent people from all aspects of life. It should be something parallel to life,” said T V Chandran, the eminent director. He was speaking at the Open forum conducted as part of the 19th IFFK at New Theatre. If cinema is to be considered as mere business venture, it could adversely affect the aesthetic quality of the movie, he added
“In Europe, parallel movies no longer share much difference from commercial movies,” said Klaus Eder, the Jury member. The business motivated approaches are literally eating parallel movies. However the ease to access latest technologies has made film schools irrelevant, he added.
“The concept of parallel cinema has changed a lot over the ages. Indian parallel cinema is nearing its extinction. There will be no such films after Adoor and Mani Kaul” said Tadeusz Lubelski, member FIPRESCI Jury.
However, director K R Mohanan had another thing to say. He said he was totally against the concept of categorizing a different movie as parallel cinema. “There are only good movies and bad movies,” he added. Sunny Joseph, Cinematographer anticipated that the viewers were aesthetically good enough to retrieve best movies. He also urged the audience to support such movies outside arena of film festival by encouraging their commercial screenings as well. Film critic C S Venkiteswaran moderated the session.
